Autobiografia

Autobiography

I have always lived in Valsusa, where I was born 67 years ago and I work there in the absolute tranquility of an art studio that offers me all the privacy I need.
After studying at the Second Artistic High School in Turin, where I was lucky enough to have Mauro Chessa, Enzo Sciavolino and Paola Pitzianti as teachers who contributed to forming my artistic personality, I began a phase of stylistic research which continues throughout now, through personal pictorial experiences.
The presentation of my work to the public took place with a first solo exhibition in 1980.
I began my artistic career in a traditional way by addressing the themes of the figure and landscape through drawing and oil and watercolor techniques, but I have always been fascinated by the search for new materials, the use of color as a vehicle of emotion and experimentation. it led me, after 2000, to a first approach to the informal.
This new vision, faced with mature age, has projected me into the heart of a renewed research which still today has not been exhausted and which is leading me back to the rediscovery of the initial themes, reinterpreting them with experimental materials.
This is where my approach to the world of design lies: it is here that the use of poor materials treated with fire led me to the creation of small works of art to wear or to place in the home as "paintings for support". The contamination between art and craftsmanship has transformed my paintings into clothes, into fashionable accessories, into "walking objects".
…”My painting is a journey through the emotional brain, an attempt to explore the most uncontrollable part of the brain, that part that communicates directly with the heart. I consider it soothing painting. I don't like to explain the contents of my works as they represent for me moments of profound dialogue with my "interior" which bring out emotions and feelings on the canvas. If I have the opportunity to talk to those who observe my canvases, I am always curious to discuss whether what I have painted is able to convey to the viewer an emotion similar to the one I felt when painting it.

From “The Spirit of Matter” - Dr. Paolo Levi

Daniela Baldo began with figuration, composing mainly female figures in an objective key. Those were the years in which Mauro Chessa taught at the art school, and it was difficult to escape his strength of signs and colours. For her, painting has always been like living in another dimension, that of pure creativity, expressing an energy that comes to her from the depths of the unconscious.

The second phase of her research was represented by formal curiosity for the landscape, always approached from an objective and anti-romantic perspective. For that occasion she partly abandoned the brush, considering it too constricting an instrument, to perceive as a priority the free gestures of the spatula, which opens up new linguistic horizons, without formal constraints or obligatory contours. The landscape, stripped of the drawing, will represent the possibility of creating large backgrounds, discovering the magic of the dilated detail, of the vibrant sensuality of the atmospheric elements. No copy from life, therefore, but only sophisticated abstractions, sensitively obtained from the recognizable revisited through a subjective emotion. They are works that can well be represented as a cycle of seasons - fog and ice above all or, better said, landscapes of the soul.

The current research should also be included in the sector of informal naturalism. Daniela Baldo initially starts from suggestions from nature, then separates the individual elements, in a process of disintegration of the image. Proceeding through emotions, she does not perform anything a priori, and therefore nothing is prefigured in these latest works. The composition almost seems to come together on its own. As an overture to the performance he outlines the whole as an aesthetic warning of the future final passages. She always begins with a decisive movement, with the awareness of moving in a self-controlled chaos, or in any case letting her natural instinct for color go freely. In each new painting she seems to change the methodology of investigation, since she loves neither the consistent nor the univocal. She is a painter who faces her own anxieties by resolving them in an immediate dialogue with the canvas, she formulates expressive illuminations of strong intensity.

Sometimes she loves to linger, meditating on new creative stimuli, remaining suspended and feeling a sort of vibrant emptiness within herself. Thus in certain cases the composition seems to come to light immediately and is completed immediately according to the initial warning; sometimes, however, the canvas is abandoned to be taken up again a few days later: the visual message will be completed only when the painter, as she herself says, feels a pleasant sensation of balance and completeness, or when she recognizes herself in it as in a mirror.

An artist of great inner balance, Daniela Baldo's paintings reflect emblematic situations that date back to distant naturalistic suggestions; in any case they are the product of great craftsmanship, with a precise sense of material and chromatic flavor. The means he uses to bring his ethical feelings and aesthetic qualities to the fore are above all brush and spatula, but he often also loves to work with a mixed technique where the color is mixed with gauze applied to the canvas, which gives thickness to the surfaces , marking them with a series of scratches and incisions. When choosing colors, she lets herself be guided by instinct: when she feels the need to express herself with warm tones, she sticks to them consistently for a few months. She then resumes a colder cycle, in which her passion is more tepid and restrained, even if she has been avoiding dark colors for some time now and prefers to act with light and sunny shades.

For Daniela Baldo the pictorial material has body and soul. Her color transmits the same vibrations that she puts into it when she spreads it with energy on the canvas. Her compositions arise from the superposition of different drafts, and are never repeated in fixed modules. Each passage of color therefore speaks in a different and autonomous way to the sensitivity of the observer, highlighting the moments of suspension and energy that alternate in the creative times of each of her works.

Prof. Franchino Falsetti Art Critic – Bologna

“….. to regenerate art, art needs to re-create itself. The artist must, however, know how to combine vision with the Spirit. A vision that must not be lost in the outside, but must identify itself in the becoming of man, in his most secret mechanisms, in the irrational nature of the indivisible self. The inner microcosm. The charm of unlimited research. A tenacious revolt against one's destiny. Trying, tenaciously, to break the chains of illusionism that envelops the "cogito" of our existence. Descend into new depths of the unexplored unconscious. Experiencing your own body, your own image as a vision of the Spirit, of the unheard, the unseen.

The value of the double, of silent and sometimes absent voices.

All this responds to and characterizes the poetics of the artist Daniela Baldo. She is a true and authentic researcher of the solitude in which today we are relegated, or rather abandoned. Her multiple experiences from figurative to abstract, from expressionism to pop, are evidence of the re-creativity of art and the artist. Her works are revealing of sensitivity and subtle suffering: they are the hidden veil of her "gaze" so as not to feel alone. Her works are written texts, they are the ideas of her revolt. The women's faces crossed by bands of color are not the evidence of life, they are the innocent attempt to shed light on one's feelings, a certain growing nausea against an irremediable world dominated by disorder and the erasure of memory.

The artist Daniela Baldo does not like the limits and decline of the contemporary Western world. Her pessimism is a source of continuous and tireless experiences, so that the mask of life is not the last resignation as if one wanted to identify the solitude of the artist with the disappearance of art".

“Figures and shadows” - Prof. Franchino Falsetti Bologna

Art, in its different expressiveness and connotations, is less and less neutral and lives, inexorably, all the contradictions of an era that shows little traces for new fields of investigation of creativity and/or inventiveness, limiting any attempt to re -find adequate tools for a critical reading of the cultural and social complexity of our contemporary history. The subtle malaise of the twentieth century has not yet exhausted its effects and its fashions have overtaken and conditioned every form of genuine and spontaneous production. We have witnessed a continuous "making" and "unmaking", always masking one's incompetence with the strangest forms of "experimentalism" or "laboratorio artis". Art has ceased to be the "colored eye" of history to become, more and more, the object of a consumption system, an offer on a par with any merchandise on display, favoring an inevitable loss of identity of 'Opera. The new demiurge of modernity is called the market: an inextricable web that regulates every flow of consumer goods including those that concern intellectual and cultural activity. “The success of the market is based on differences and variety…Culture, in the consumer society, fits into this context and is no exception”. (Zygmunt Baumann)

What becomes necessary, therefore, is to focus attention on the work of art and characterize the relationship between the artist and his productivity in a more problematic way, in order to liberalize every creative act, freeing it from any temptation or easy suggestion suggested from the art market purse. It is not an original proposal but it is a re-evaluation of a combination on which a long literature has developed and on which every phenomenology of being has tended to consider the work of art as a set of projects, as a process of ideation of the "true", a sort of illumination in making visible the contrasts that hide or contrast in our existential actions. The work of art as significance and cosmic synthesis. A continuous revelation of one's own subjectivity, of one's unique and original inner world. All this is contained in the work of the artist Daniela Baldo: a multifaceted artist, who identified her way of being and living in her painting. Her production ranges from the figurative to the informal but there are no ideational contrasts: the work lives on her technique and every material and material choice is specified in the artistic technique. The figures live independently of their location and shape. The artist Daniela Baldo, endowed with particular artistic sensitivity, does not create degenerative figures, but reveals to us her entire interior world which is a potential of "libertarian dreams", of intimate visions that live on idealistic forces and articulated discursiveness, which result in broad and effective technical-stylistic intuitions and appropriate combinatorial choices.

In the heterogeneous and elegant production of this artist there is a natural tendency towards metaphorical language which allows us to combine perception, memory with strategies of synthesis, of systematisation of the data of reality relived and internalized as a vision of one's own imagination. Her work is the mirror of her "secret" world which awaits to become individual and social materiality, to objectify the signs and meanings of one's intimate experience in communicative and artistic knowledge. Her psycho-cultural investigation presents an aspect of particular interest: the figures that are chosen are of both sexes and are fixed in moments of engaging emotional and evocative intensity. The line is essential to make each image determined by its posture and its movement: they are moments of life that project "shadows" of restlessness, of loneliness, of abandonment, of epochal malaise. They are metaphorical figures that speak of our present, of social and environmental disorder, since they express themselves and act like automatons, sometimes like real mannequins devoid of any authentic identity or signs of recognition. The artist Daniela Baldo in her metaphorical and metaphysical game materializes the process of "desertification" of humanism in the contemporary age: men and women who are increasingly alone and increasingly anonymous. She tries to highlight the desire to erase the "shadows" and to get out of this drift that makes us immobile and withdrawn. The role of the artist is fully carried out: to express one's inner visions in order to not only feel like a witness to an era but to be able to make known her personal feelings towards what is changing our way of being and being. The artist Daniela Baldo, in her figures, tries to identify new ways of spirituality of life and to make it possible to feel the humanity of the other as a person, as a "cosmic" entity, as a harmonious union of timeless values. There is all the weight of the so-called "mass civilization", there is the awareness of wanting to have a role, of being able to act without being approved. There is, perhaps, the dream of a new Utopia, a reality that enhances our "inner landscape" and spreads, first and foremost, the cry of conquest of all individual freedoms. To the historical separation between abstract and concrete, Daniela Baldo opposes a design synthesis that allows her to artistically express the existential void of contemporary man, considering art as a precious source of "thinking more than seeing".

The artist Daniela Baldo performs commissioned works regarding portraiture.
